Stocks were in bounce mode as of midday on Tuesday, with the Nasdaq and the S&P 500 both up more than 3% halfway through trading. Today's gains so far are in part a reaction to the powerfully oversold conditions created by Monday's historic decline.
Financial stocks are the main beneficiaries of today's buying pressure, as shares of Sovereign Bancorp Inc. (SOV | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) added a whopping 71% as of midday, and Wachovia (WB | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) leapt by more than 60%. Other financial stocks advancing halfway through trading on Tuesday were Citigroup (C | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating), up more than 14%, and JP Morgan Chase & Company (JPM | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating), which was ahead by nearly 12%.
Also higher were Nasdaq stocks such as Research in Motion (RIMM | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating), which had gained more than 9% as of midday on Tuesday, and Amazon.com (AMZN | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating), up by more than 8%.
